History
of the WAI, International
(All Spacecity members will be
automatically a member of the Women in Aviation, International
club)
WAI,
International is a professional, nonprofit organization dedicated
to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation
career fields and interests.
The first Annual International Women in Aviation Conference
was held in 1990. Following a number of successful conferences,
Women in Aviation, International (WAI) was established in 1994
as a professional, nonprofit organization. Today, WAI has more
than 7,000 members worldwide and partnerships with organizations
such as NASA, the FAA, and others.
During the past two decades the number of women involved in
the aviation industry has steadily increased and women can be
found in nearly every aviation occupation today. However, the
numbers are small by comparison. Women pilots, for example,
represent only six percent of the total pilot population and
only slightly more than two percent are Airline Transport Pilot
(ATP) rated. Women account for only 2.13 percent of the more
than 540,000 non-pilot aviation jobs in the United States.
WAISCC
encourages people to seek opportunities in aviation and aerospace
by promoting professional development skills including networking,
fostering education, and encouraging public understanding of

aerospace.
Our membership is made up of both men and women including
aviation/aerospace professionals, enthusiasts, and students.
You do not have to be currently employed in aviation or have
a specific background; we're looking for people who enjoy the
aviation field and all its ups and downs, and want to broaden
their knowledge and experience.

OUR
STORY
What
began as a simple inquiry to Gerri Schultz, the chapter coordinator
for WAI, International has grown into the first official chapter
in Houston. Laura Jolley, ATP and the President of a B737 Part
142 Training Center, inquired if a Houston Area Chapter was
in the works. No one was actively pursuing a chapter. As organizing
coordinator, Laura brought together a core group to plan a public
meeting.
